Robert Lomax (William Holden) goes to Hong Kong to pursue his dream of being a painter, renting a room in the Wan Chai district.
He meets a seemingly wealthy young woman, Mi-Ling, who later reveals her true identity as Suzie Wong, a well-known bar girl and prostitute at the Nam Kok Hotel.
Suzie becomes Robert’s model for his paintings, and they eventually fall into a passionate romance.
A major twist occurs when Robert discovers Suzie has a child from a previous relationship, which she had hidden from him.
The film explores themes of love, cultural differences, and the complexities of human relationships in a historical Hong Kong setting.
The screenplay by John Patrick was adapted from the 1958 stage play by Paul Osborn,
which was based on the 1957 novel of the same title by Richard Mason.
