Description

The three small white dots at upper left are Saturn’s moons. The largest is Tethys. The second largest, below Tethys, is Mimas. The smallest speck at the edge of Saturn’s rings is Janus. Saturn has 60 moons, of which 22 are regular satellites that orbit close to, or within, the rings and are named after Greek Titans. Saturn’s rings, seen casting a shadow on the planet, consist of particles of nearly pure water ice and meteoric dust. Image obtained using Cassini’s wide-angle camera on the 30th October 2007 at a distance of 2.6 million kilometres from Saturn. (Photo by Science Photo Library)
