Description

This is one of the smaller moons of Saturn, not discovered until 1980. Its dimensions are approximately 30 by 23 by 14 kilometres, with the portion seen here being around 21 kilometres across. Impact craters are seen on its surface. Calypso is a Trojan moon, orbiting in the trailing Lagrangian point of the larger moon Tethys. Its surface is smooth due to sandblasting from ice particles in Saturn’s large E Ring. This image is the most detailed yet obtained of Calypso. It was obtained on 13 February 2010, by the narrow-angle camera on the Cassini spacecraft that is in orbit around Saturn. (Photo by Science Photo Library)
