Jarvis Cocker, Pulp photographed by Kevin Westenberg for NME Magazine in Paris in July 1996.
Kevin Westenberg recalls, “I already had a history with Pulp, having shot the covers for ‘INTRO’, released in October 1993, and the cover for ‘HIS –n- HERS’ released in April 1994 which were both commissioned via Savage & Best.
The perfect assignment. I had little idea what our direction would be as there were no lights or assistants, just the Eurostar train ticket, camera, film, and backstage lights. Make it up as you go along! This particular shot was one of my favorites for years after. It was the direction I wish the work could always be. Commercial concerns however dictated otherwise.
The NME even created this image as a poster insert later. This shot of Jarvis was also featured in my London exhibition, ‘Idyll Worship’ in 2006. A very lucky moment, caught in the blink of an eye.
Only one or maybe two frames were taken of Jarvis as we walked back to the OLYMPIA Theatre, where Pulp was to play that night. I asked Jarvis to look up to get more light on his face. I had no idea the exposure would even work as it was a guess, so when I saw this on the contact sheet, it was a happy moment. The angle was such that it was also easy to tell who it is.
The arms on hips are also perfectly placed”.
