Description

Saturn, the sixth planet from the Sun, orbits at a distance of over 1.4 billion kilometres. It has a diameter of over 120,000 kilometres, nearly ten times that of Earth, and a volume of over 800 Earths. A gas giant, it consists mostly of hydrogen and helium. The outer surface clouds are coloured by trace chemical elements. A large Great White Spot storm and trailing turbulence in its northern hemisphere is at lower centre. Saturn’s large ring system consists of thousands of rock and ice chunks. This image, taken with a 356mm reflector telescope and CCD camera, from Selsey, West Sussex, UK, was obtained on 28 March 2011. (Photo by Science Photo Library)
